The process of translating data from an audio or video format into a written document format is known as transcription. Audio and video are the two media types that transcriptionists most frequently work with.

The process of converting a written material from one language to another is called translation. Maintaining the meaning and relevance of the audio, video, or document being translated is the most crucial part of translation. This calls for a skilled translator who is completely conversant in both the source language’s original form and the destination language. If not, the translation won’t be exact or accurate and won’t be a perfect replica of the original language source format.

When working with either audio or video, if there is a language barrier or if there is foreign conversation that is not understandable to the intended audience, translation of the transcription may be necessary. An illustration of this would be an English-language film with some foreign speech. When the dialogue in the audio or video is jumbled or garbled and makes it difficult for the audience to understand what is being said, translation may also be required.

A useful tool for video formats is subtitles. Different subtitling rules are used, depending on the nature, type, and length of the video. For instance, the standards for subtitling vary depending on the type of content—commercials, movies, and television shows. In most cases, the client will specify the details of how they would want the subtitles to appear in their particular video format.

It’s critical to realize that closed captioning, which is text in a video intended for a deaf or hard of hearing audience, is unrelated to subtitles. Because it incorporates information about who is speaking and pertinent sounds like a doorbell, a dog barking, or music being played, closed captioning is more precise than subtitling. These are typically shown in a black box that is located close to the bottom of the screen.

Subtitles, on the other hand, are meant for people who can hear but may not be able to understand what is being said, either because the speech is unclear and difficult to understand, contains dialogue in a foreign language, or is being directed at a foreign audience. The accuracy of the transcription and/or translation is crucial for all of the aforementioned reasons. Otherwise, the target audience won’t understand the message the video is trying to express because the subtitles won’t accurately match the dialogue in the video.

To guarantee that your message is accurately communicated to your target audience, it is crucial to hire a professional business to handle your transcription, translation, and/or video subtitling needs. For all of your needs in transcription, translation, and subtitling, Speechpad offers a one-stop shop.
